In recent years, holographic simulations and 3D effects have made a comeback in popular culture and their potentials have been explored with renewed vigour in diverse cultural arenas such as the entertainment and digital legacy industries, or in the context of memorial museums and heritage sites. The optical effects associated with holograms have become grafted onto an expanding range of digital technologies (CGI) and cultural objects: virtual performances of ‘holographically’ reanimated late musicians[1] or cinema releases such as Marjorie Prime (2017), in which a widow suffering from Alzheimer’s spends her dying days in the company of a hologram of her late husband, show that holographic representations have become invested with the human dream (and potential nightmare) of bringing the dead back to life or at least of opening up some form of afterlife. The book explores a range of different technologies from interactive volumetric displays with voice recognition to stereoscopic 3D for which ‘hologram’ has evolved as an umbrella term, indicating an audience experience with a long media history that reaches back to the Phantasmagoria of the 18th and 19th century.
