Thomas May’s The Tragedy of Antigone, The Theban Princesse was printed in 1631 by Thomas Harper in a single octavo edition for the publisher Benjamin Fisher and was probably composed between 1627 and 1630. As there is no record of performance, some scholars tend to consider it a closet play, thereby connecting it to an elite culture. This first modern-spelling and annotated edition of the first English dramatic adaptation of the Antigone myth in England will contribute to the reassessment of the significance of Thomas May as a playwright.
