The edition presents Lumley’s Tragedy of Iphigeneia, composed in the early to mid-1550s, the first extant dramatic work by an early modern woman, and the first translation of any Greek tragedy into English. The play, edited with full critical apparatus, is followed by Lumley’s Latin translations of five orations by Isocrates, and an appendix providing Erasmus’ translation of Euripides’ Iphigenia in Aulis, used by Lumley. The presentation of Lumley’s creative body of work in this way will allow for a more comprehensive appreciation of her practices as a translator than has yet been possible. The introduction situates Lumley’s work within its historical, political, and intellectual contexts. Drawing on feminist, performance, and material textuality studies’ theory and practice, it builds on the established coexistence of private and public within early modern closet drama to re-evaluate Iphigeneia’s political and literary significance. In addition, it establishes the precise nature of Lumley’s engagement with her Greek sources, providing a model for theorising the reception of Greek in this period which speaks to growing critical interest in this area.
