It is known for its elegant typeface and illustrations, its elaborate celebration of Antiquity, and its enigmatic allegorical story. It is also known for the Latinate Italian in which it is written, which adds to the work’s complexity. This may be one reason that, despite its fame and influence, the work did not appear in a full English translation until 1999 (completed by Joscelyn Godwin). However, this was not the first attempt to adapt the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili for an English readership. In 1592, one ‘R. D.’ (likely the Elizabethan courtier, travel writer and translator Sir Robert Dallington) produced a partial translation under the title The Strife of Love in a Dreame (copies printed by Simon Waterson, William Holme and John Busbie, London). This modern edition of The Strife of Love in a Dreame highlights its merits as a literary translation in its own right; provides a context for this translation as part of broader literary and intellectual Elizabethan culture; sheds light on the identity of R.D.; offers insights into Early Modern English book history; and opens up the study of the reception history of the Hypnerotomachia in England.
