During this period four Spanish film adaptations of Golden Age drama are produced which mediate the changing relationship with historic enemy, the United States at the end of the Second World War. In the first study to place these adaptations in the context of the Cold War, Jackie Stirling considers the regime’s manipulation of two key institutions of Western soft power, Hollywood and European film festivals to commodify star and celebrity images central to these films. The adaptations reward analysis in relation to feminist, intermedial, carnavalesque and queer theories; approaches by which the author questions the relegation of these films to Francoist kitsch. Jackie Stirling is a film historian with a particular research interest in Spanish cinema.
