Avanti il divorzio (1902) by Anna Franchi (Livorno, 1867 – Milan, 1954) is at once an autobiographical novel, and a politically engaged work, 'una lancia spezzata a favore del divorzio’, as one contemporary reviewer put it. Creating an account of her own life (attributed to a female protagonist, Anna Mirello), the author sets out to demonstrate the urgent need for divorce, which, at the time of her writing, did not exist in Italy.
