They appeared at the same time, but as it would appear coincidentally, in the spring of 1803; Goethe knew of Schiller’s plan, but had kept his own a closely-guarded secret. The plays have common themes, but there are also significant divergences between them. Stylistically, the authors had come as far as possible from their youthful enthusiasms and The Natural Daughter and The Bride of Messina represent the apogee of this movement, counter-revolutionary in both an aesthetic and, explicitly or implicitly, a political sense. F. J. Lamport is University Lecturer in German, retired, and Emeritus Fellow of Worcester College, University of Oxford.
