The Cantigas de Santa Maria are unique in medieval European culture. Their 420 lyrics, all but a few with their music, form one of the largest bodies of thirteenth-century Hispanic poetry and a major repository of medieval song. The four surviving contemporary manuscripts include, in the códice rico and its continuation, one of the finest monuments of medieval art. Despite their preeminence in all these fields, there has been little critical discussion of the interplay between text, music and illustration in the Cantigas and of the relationships between the different manuscripts. This book represents a major step towards redressing the situation. It brings together papers by internationally renowned scholars from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, the USA and Great Britain. The title Cobras e Son (literally 'verses and melody') has already become associated with the continued interdisciplinary activities of these scholars.
