RenaissancePortugueseTranslationPoetry

This edition deals with the first three Spanish translations of Luís de Camões’s Portuguese epic Os Lusíadas (1572), which recounts Vasco da Gama’s voyage of discovery to India, and which is, on one level, a retelling of Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid. The Spanish translations were published in the final decades of the sixteenth century, by Bento Caldeira (Los Lusíadas (1580)), Luis Gómez de Tapia (La Lusíada (1580)), and Henrique Garcés (Los Lusíadas (1591)). The volume brings together selected episodes of the Portuguese epic in the Spanish translations — the dedication, the Council of the Gods Episode, the Old Man of Restelo’s Episode, the Adamastor Episode, Vasco da Gama’s remarks on poetry, and the Isle of Love Episode — with accompanying English translations. The selected episodes are those which are most frequently referenced and discussed by scholars of the Portuguese epic and which seem to have been most influential in the Spanish and Portuguese literary traditions. In such a way, the scope of the book aims to give solid coverage of the most important episodes but restricts itself to the moments that are most likely to be of interest to scholars of Spanish and Portuguese literature, early modern translation, translation theory, reception of classical texts, and the history of Spanish-Portuguese relations in the sixteenth century.
