The correspondence between these writers of different generations provides intimate insights into that editorial work and into the construction of the elder Coleridge’s posthumous reputation, in which Sara Coleridge played a principal role. Robinson, in turn, who had earlier assisted the poet in his work, helped Sara Coleridge interpret and annotate her father’s writings. This volume presents a critical edition, with a substantial introduction and explanatory notes, of this manuscript correspondence. Intertwined with their work on the poet, and their insights into (and gossip about) the legacy of the Coleridge–Wordsworth–Southey circle, the two writers engaged in a sustained religious debate: a liberal Unitarian and an independent-minded Anglican, both steeped in German sources to an unusual degree, they were both committed to the candid expression of their personal convictions. The letters also discuss personal relationships and life events — including Robinson’s experience of an operation during which he was sedated by chloroform. The edition will be of interest to scholars and lovers of Romantic and Victorian literature and intellectual and theological history.
