An actress and translator as well as novelist, she wrote some of the eighteenth century’s best-selling novels. Riccoboni’s popularity was such that Marie Antoinette owned a copy of her first novel, Lettres de mistriss Fanni Butlerd (1757), bound to look like a prayer book. The novel presents a proto-feminist epistolary account of a doomed love affair. It stands at the intersection of multiple important literary currents of the early modern period, including the late seventeenth-century sentimental novel, classical moralists, and emblematic genres of the French Enlightenment, including the eighteenth-century epistolary and libertine novels. Fanni’s letters provide fascinating and intimate insight into the social conditions of women during the period. In an era in which the separation between public and private became ever more apparent, its original use of publication to hold men accountable for their misdeeds against women is inscribed in a long history of feminist resistance.
