Published in 1593, Thomas Lodge’s Phillis: Honoured with Pastoral Sonnets, Elegies and Amorous Delights, is a sequence of 40 sonnets, 2 eclogues, one ode, one elegy and one complaint (‘The Complaint of Elstred’) which, though not precisely set in the pastoral environment that the title promises, revolves around the relationship between Damon and his beloved, Phillis. This complete, modern-spelling and critical edition of the text brings fresh insight into the appreciation of Phillis against the background of contemporary scholarship.
