Thomas Lodge (1558–1625) is known to have pioneered several of the genres he experimented with across his literary career (defence of the stage, development of satire, minor epic poetry, translations of Seneca) and which were later cultivated and made popular by figures such as Sidney, Shakespeare, and Marlowe. This edition intends to contribute to the better knowledge of the author of the first English epyllion as a man of his time, and to pinpoint the aspects of Scilla’s Metamorphosis (1589) that were later consolidated by Shakespeare (Venus and Adonis, 1593) and Marlowe (Hero and Leander, 1598) as defining traits of this genre.
