Moreover, a reputation for obscurity has often haunted his first two poetry books, The Shadow of Night (1594) and Ovid’s Banquet of Sense (1595). This edition sets out to show that Chapman’s first two poetry books comprise a lively and innovative corpus in the context of sixteenth-century poetry, as well as providing an attractive asset for rethinking its canon with a view to teaching and research. The volume includes a substantial introduction that presents a critical update of the state of the art and advances fresh reassessments of Chapman’s poetry, and significant explanatory notes and appendices.
