Like the author, Dayne inherits wealth that allows him to experiment with a career as a painter before switching to poetry and literary journalism. Highly versatile in form and content, Moore's novel offers a gossip-filled insider's account of French art and literature; as well as presenting the story of a creative artistic awakening and providing a meditation upon influence and formation in the tradition of the Bildungsroman. Matthew Creasy is a Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Glasgow.
