Austria Hungary did not acquire a formal empire overseas, but Austrians (sometimes in official or semi-official capacities) engaged in a variety of colonialist activities and thereby contributed to the European project of conquest and domination. Concentrating mainly on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Austrian Studies 20 investigates Austrian overseas travel, the visual and textual representation of encounter in places like Africa, India, South and Central America, and the Arctic, ‘global science’ conducted by Austrians, Maximilian von Habsburg’s Mexican reign, and Austrian overseas engagement in the context of European politics.
