Massimiliano Morini Wins the IASEMS Mariangela Tempera Prize
Volume 28 in the MHRA’s Tudor and Stuart Translations series, The First English ‘Pastor Fido’, edited by Massimiliano Morini, has won the 2026 Mariangela Tempera Book Prize from the Italian Association of Shakespearean and Early Modern Studies (IASEMS). The prize is awarded biennially to scholarly monographs or critical editions written by IASEMS members.
The First English ‘Pastor Fido’ is a critical edition of an early seventeenth-century English translation of one of the most popular pastoral plays of the early modern period, originally written in Italian by Giovanni Battista Guarini. The translation, probably by Tailboys Dymock, is the less well-known English version of the play, but deserves more attention as a concerted effort to fit the play into the style of the late Elizabethan stage.
A recent review in the journal Cahiers Élisabéthains said of the volume that it is ‘indispensable for scholars of early modern translation, comparative literature, and cultural poetics’.
Professor Morini said, on winning the prize: ‘Being appreciated is good, being appreciated and understood is better. The jury focused specifically on the introduction, and praised its attempt at adding something to our general knowledge of early modern (theatre) translation. Even more importantly, this was a jury of peers and the expression of an association which is dedicated to the study of early modern English literature, linguistics and translation. I can think of richer prizes, but none comes to mind which would be more rewarding.’
