The Oxford Magazine, founded in 1883, is a sort of literary and commentary supplement to the official University of Oxford Gazette: a lively read, it carries trenchant analyses of education policy, local-interest pieces, and a surprisingly strong line in poetry, from the Inklings to the present day. Tolkien's Tom Bombadil first appeared in the Oxford Magazine, and now so have we. The Magazine was kind enough to invite our Chair, Derek Connon, and Company Secretary, Barbara Burns, to explain our role as a learned society, and this is what we had to say.
