Editorial Positions for MLR and YES
The MHRA (Modern Humanities Research Association) is pleased to invite applications from colleagues for two separate editorial roles within the English Studies field of its publishing activity. Note that English Studies is understood broadly, as relating to the literatures and cultures of medieval, modern and contemporary English both within Europe and around the world.

1. English Editor, Modern Language Review (MLR)
This position, starting in January 2024, is part of an established editorial team covering the English, French, Germanic, Italian, Hispanic and Slavonic languages. MLR, the flagship journal of the MHRA, publishes four professionally copy-edited issues per year. It is one of the oldest journals in its field, maintaining an unbroken publication record since its foundation in 1905. The requirements for this editorial role are a passion for the subject, fine judgement and diplomacy, ability to work to deadlines, and the willingness to serve on the MHRA committee that meets three times a year, once online and twice in London. The English Editor is responsible for editing all copy in this section of the journal, for seeking peer reviews of articles, and for commissioning reviews. The position is unpaid, but the MHRA covers all expenses. Applications are invited from experienced UK-based academics in any field relating to English literary and cultural studies. The Editor will be required to become a member of the Association if she/he is not already a member. Please contact the MHRA Company Secretary, Dr Barbara Burns (Barbara.burns@mhra.org.uk), by 30 November 2023, with a brief statement about why you are applying, including a CV and the names of two referees. The General Editor of MLR, Dr Lucy O’Meara (l.e.o’meara@kent.ac.uk), will also be happy to answer informal enquiries in advance of the closing date for applications.
2. General Editor, Yearbook of English Studies (YES)
The Yearbook of English Studies, devoted to the language and literatures of the English-speaking world, is an annual volume of specially commissioned articles on a broad topic or theme. The position of General Editor, starting in January 2024, is open to established academics working in the field of English Studies and based in the UK or Ireland. Each volume is produced by guest editors and is professionally copy-edited; the General Editor’s role is that of commissioning, advising on and overseeing the process. The requirements for this editorial role are a passion for the subject, fine judgement and diplomacy, ability to work to deadlines, and the willingness to serve on the MHRA committee that meets three times a year, once online and twice in London. The position is unpaid, but the MHRA covers all expenses. The General Editor will be required to become a member of the Association if she/he is not already a member. Please contact the MHRA Company Secretary, Dr Barbara Burns (Barbara.burns@mhra.org.uk), by 30 November 2023, with a brief statement about why you are applying, including a CV and the names of two referees. The current General Editor, Professor Andrew Hiscock (a.hiscock@bangor.ac.uk), will also be happy to answer informal enquiries in advance of the closing date for applications.
