The Latest Radical
David McCallam, translator of André Chénier's verse in our book André Chénier: Poetry and Revolution 1792-1794, is interviewed at the Radical Translations project website. Radical Translations is an enquiry into, and a sort of resuscitation of, the long history of translation of French Revolutionary texts: which crossed the Channel to England, and crossed the Alps to Italy. As translators, they spread either the fresh air of liberation or the virus of sedition, according to taste, but certainly had an impact. So David arrives on the scene a little later than most, but stands in an honourable tradition.
