We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Barbara Burns as Company Secretary of the MHRA. This is a new, professionalized post, reflecting the increasing complexity of the Association’s work.

Barbara is ideally suited to this role in terms of both her academic and leadership background. She is an established researcher in the field of nineteenth-century Germanic literature and has held a number of management roles at the University of Glasgow. But above all, she draws on many years’ hands-on experience as a Trustee and Officer of the MHRA, having served as Honorary Secretary from 2010 to 2018, and Chair of the Association from 2018 to 2021.

Barbara says:

‘It’s an honour to take up this strategic role as the MHRA moves forward into its second century of activity. The Association offers valuable support both to individual researchers and to the broader subject area of Modern Languages and English Studies, and I’m delighted to focus my energies in this field.’
