The Annual Bibliography of English Language & Literature is widely regarded as one of the most important bibliographical sources for English studies, and an indispensable tool for scholars in this field.
The Bibliography aims to list annually all scholarly articles, books and reviews concerning English language and literature and related topics published anywhere in the world, and in any language. (Education and pedagogical subjects, and the medical application of linguistics, are excluded.)
The list of subjects covered includes: Drama; Poetry; Fiction; Biography; Literary Theory; Film; Bibliography; Traditional Culture; Onomastics; Lexicography; Dialectology.
A cumulative database version of ABELL, updated monthly, is available online from ProQuest, both in its own right, and as a part of the Literature Online service. This database now includes more than one million records.

History. ABELL first appeared in 1921 as a 64-page pamphlet edited by A. C. Paues, costing 3/6, and had 1015 entries covering items published in 1920.
Database Access. The cumulative database version of ABELL is available online from ProQuest, both in its own right, and as a part of the Literature Online service which includes links from the bibliographic records to the full text of the articles or reviews wherever possible. The Editors supply monthly updates for this service and the database now includes more than one million records.
Subscriptions. The Modern Humanities Research Association has now transferred subscription administration and management for the print edition of ABELL to Intermedia Brand Marketing Ltd, which is now managing subscriptions and distribution of our journals.
