La Découverte de l'Ile Frivole (1751) by François-Gabriel Coyer draws on the contemporary popularity of travel accounts, and portrays the English admiral Anson and his crew stranded on an island whose inhabitants, called Frivolites, are entirely occupied with fashions, hairstyles, novels, and desserts. This sparkling parody presents a harsh but playful picture of France in the early years of the reign of Louis XV.
