MHRA Critical Texts Vol. 28
ISBN 978-1-907322-17-4
Spring 2012
Pbk £9.99 / $15.99 / EUR11.99
The critical apparatus for this edition of Eliza Haywood's novel which was first published in 1744 includes details of textual variants and explanatory footnotes. The extensive introduction examines the position of the text in the English literary system of the 18th century and its importance for research into French literature of the same period. (This novel was partially translated and then rewritten by Claude Crébillon in his Les Heureux Orphelins (1754).)
The introduction to the critical edition pays particular attention to intercultural exchange between France and England in the 18th century, of which Haywood’s novel and its translation/adaptation by Crébillon is a perfect illustration.
Jan Herman and Beatrijs Vanacker teach at the Catholic University of Leuven.
Orders may be placed from this page once the volume has been published.
