History
The Legenda series was founded in 1995 by Malcolm Bowie (1943-2007) with the aim of forming a new scholarly press in the humanities: one that would be governed by academics, would be open to interdisciplinary work, and would make available the results of advanced research by both new and established scholars. Under his dynamic leadership, Legenda formed partnerships with the Society for French Studies, the Modern Humanities Research Association, and the British Comparative Literature Association. Those ties are still firm today, just as many members of the original Editorial Board continue to serve. Malcolm Bowie remained chairman of the Board until his election to the Mastership of Christ's College, Cambridge, and continued to advise and support the enterprise thereafter.
Under the management of Kareni Bannister at the European Humanities Research Centre of the University of Oxford, Legenda grew very rapidly, and by 2000 it had become a substantial presence in British academic publishing. By 2004, the operation could no longer continue in a sub-department of a single university, and the MHRA and Maney Publishing, assumed joint responsibility for the series. In 2006, the imprint was enlarged by the inclusion of the Italian Perspectives series, previously published by Maney.
Legenda remains true today to its original aims. At a time when fewer publishers will consider publishing specialized academic monographs, Legenda provides an essential outlet for the work of young and senior researchers alike.
