The MHRA plays a major role in promoting academic endeavour in the modern humanities by facilitating the publication of original scholarly work of the highest standard. The Association publishes scholarly articles in six journals (The Modern Language Review, The Yearbook of English Studies, Portuguese Studies, Austrian Studies, Oxford German Studies, and The Slavonic and East European Review, this last in conjunction with the School of Slavonic and East European Studies). All articles are passed to specialist readers for review and accepted or rejected on the basis of the readers' recommendations.
In addition to publishing a selection of the articles submitted to the editor, The Yearbook of English Studies also commissions articles for its themed volumes from distinguished experts in the relevant fields.
The Association manages two book series: the Publications of the MHRA and the MHRA Texts and Dissertations. In the case of the former series, members of the Committee act as readers for proposals, with additional specialists consulted where necessary to ensure a rigorous process of peer assessment. A group of editors oversees the MHRA Texts and Dissertations series and again consults external readers where necessary.
Through its Publications Fund the Association provides financial support for scholarly works that would not be viable in the commercial book market. As well as scholarly monographs these include critical editions of historically important works previously available only in manuscript form or long out of print. In appropriate cases the MHRA assists publication by acting as joint publisher with other scholarly organisations. In all cases, the Association takes full account of the readers' reports commissioned by the publishers.
