The Association fulfils its purpose of encouraging research in the modern humanities by:
* publishing journals, bibliographies, monographs and other aids to research;
* assisting with publication of original work, by subvention, or by collaboration with other learned publishers;
* appointing annually up to three Research Associates to corporate projects of distinction, such as dictionaries, textual editions, bibliographies, or related scholarly enterprises.
* offering annually up to five Conference Grants to support conferences or colloquia within the field of medieval and modern European languages and literatures (including English) held in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland.
